Improve 64 will reduce congestion and improve safety and mobility in southeast Indiana.
Improve 64 will reduce congestion as well as improve safety and mobility along I-64 in Floyd County. It includes additional travel lanes, interchange reconfigurations and replacement and rehabilitation of bridges and pavement. Planning is underway with the Project Team analyzing alternatives and reviewing potential environmental impacts. Construction is expected to begin in late 2024.
The purpose of the project is to reduce congestion on I-64 from the State Road 62/64 interchange to the Spring Street interchange.
Insufficient freeway capacity around the I-64 and I-265 interchange results in:
An additional travel lane is planned in each direction on I-64 from US 150 to approximately Cherry Street. Additional travel/auxiliary lanes are planned on I-265 from State Street to I-64.
Adding another travel lane on I-64 will increase capacity and improve mobility and safety. Modifying the I-64 and I-265 interchange will improve traffic flow, especially during morning and evening commutes.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2024 and take about two years to complete.
