Improve 64 will reduce congestion and improve safety and mobility in southeast Indiana.
Improve 64 will reduce congestion and improve safety and mobility along I-64 in Floyd County.
It includes added travel lanes, interchange reconfigurations, and the replacement and rehabilitation of bridges and pavement. The Design-Build Low Bid contract was awarded to William Charles Construction in November 2025. Pre-construction activities are expected to begin in late 2025, and project construction will follow in early 2026. Construction is anticipated to be substantially
complete by late 2029.
The purpose of the project is to reduce congestion on I-64 from the State Road 62/64 interchange to the Spring Street interchange.
Insufficient freeway capacity around the I-64 and I-265 interchange results in:
An additional travel lane is planned in each direction on I-64 from US 150 to approximately Cherry Street. Additional travel/auxiliary lanes are planned on I-265 from State Street to I-64.
Adding another travel lane on I-64 will increase capacity and improve mobility and safety. Modifying the I-64 and I-265 interchange will improve traffic flow, especially during morning and evening commutes.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2026 and take about three years to complete.
